How to Wash Lash Extensions (Step-by-Step Aftercare)

Washing your lashes is not optional and it will not make them fall out. Oil, makeup, and skin debris at the lash line are what break down adhesive. Clients who cleanse daily consistently get more out of a set than clients who don't.

What you need

• An oil-free foaming lash cleanser
• A soft lash cleansing brush or a clean fan brush
• A clean, lint-free towel — never a fluffy cotton one
• A spoolie for drying and combing

The daily routine

Step 1 — Foam

Pump the cleanser onto the brush, not directly onto your eye. Close your eye.

Step 2 — Brush the lash line

Work the brush gently downward and side to side along the lash line, where the buildup actually is. Light pressure, no scrubbing.

Step 3 — Rinse

Cool or lukewarm water, cupped in your hand or from a squeeze bottle. Rinse until nothing feels slippery. A shower stream straight at your face is too forceful.

Step 4 — Pat dry

Blot with a lint-free towel. Don't rub.

Step 5 — Comb

Once mostly dry, comb through with a spoolie to reset the fan direction. A cool hairdryer on low from arm's length speeds this up.

What to avoid

• Oil-based cleansers, makeup removers, and eye creams
• Mascara of any kind, including so-called extension-safe formulas
• Waterproof eyeliner near the lash line
• Cotton pads and cotton rounds — the fibers catch
• Eyelash curlers
• Face steamers and long, hot steam sessions

Makeup with extensions

Powder shadow and cream products above the crease are fine. Keep everything off the lash line itself, and remove eye makeup with an oil-free micellar water on a lint-free pad rather than a cotton round.

Workouts, swimming, and sleep

Rinse after sweating so salt doesn't sit on the lashes. Rinse after chlorine or salt water. Sleep on your back where possible, and use a silk pillowcase if you're a side sleeper.
